Connecting to the OpenVista Appliance from an external workstation:

1) Determine the IP address of the Appliance:

  • Use the following menu: Applications > Accessories > Terminal
  • Type: ifconfig eth0 ('ifconfig' displays all network adapters)
  • Note the IP address labeled 'inet addr'
  • (Reminder: the Appliance is set to retrieve an IP via the DHCP protocol)

2) Setup CIS on an external workstation

  • Download CIS from medsphere.org or the Appliance(*)
  • Unpack the archive
  • Verify the workstation meets the CIS software requirements
  • Run the OpenVistaCIS.exe application

3) Connect to the OpenVista Appliance

  • On the CIS connection screen, modify the Options section
  • Set the Server option to be the IP address of the server
  • Set the Port option to be 7979 (the port the bridge is running on the Appliance)

PLEASE NOTE: In older releases of the OpenVista Appliance, the image repository address was statically set to 'localhost'. This allowed CIS running on the Appliance itself to retrieve images, but instances of CIS running on external workstations were unable to retrieve images unless the image repository address was manually updated in the NETWORK LOCATION file. As of Release 3, the Appliance automatically sets the image repository address to the Appliance's DHCP-assigned external IP address. Thus, CIS should be able to retrieve images, even if it is running on an external workstation.

* Because OpenVista CIS is a cross-platform .NET app, you can use the Linux version of CIS installed on the Appliance on Windows. Simply copy the OpenVista CIS application to your Windows computer by opening a connection to the built in Windows Network (Samba) share.

In Windows, go to the Start menu -> Run... and type:

    \\<ip address of appliance>\openvista

Navigate to the Binaries\openvistacis-1.0 Beta folder and copy the client folder to your Windows computer. If you have the other prerequites (.NET 1.1 and Gtk#) installed, simply execute OpenVistaCIS.exe.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to .NET security restrictions, you can not run the OpenVistaCIS.exe application directly from the network share without modifying your Code Access Security settings. For now, we recommend you simply copy the entire CIS application directory to your Windows computer.
